The Tour of Rwanda just concluded its fourth edition and Japanese photographer Sonoko Tanaka was there capturing the moments of this amazing race.

The level of competition at the Tour of Rwanda is much greater than you’d expect. It’s classified as a UCI 2.2 (Africa Tour) and 31 year old South African Derren Lill (Team Bonitas) won the overall classification in 22:43 in his final race before retiring as a professional. Lill was signed with the now defunct Pegasus Racing in 2010, and had previously raced with notable teams such as Barloworld, Navigators Insurance, BMC, Team Type 1 and Fly V Australia. Lill told velonews, “Their racing is currently better than what we have in South Africa,” he said. “You can just see how big of a sport it is with the amount of spectators and some good sponsors involved. It’s fantastic to see. It’s like doing a big European race with the amount of crowds on the side of the road and all the TV coverage.”

Sonoko Tanaka was in Rwanda capturing the moments and has generously shares her work below. Unfortunately I can’t offer much insight into the who, what, when, and where of each photo, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy the colors, the atmosphere, and the good that cycling is doing for this country that’s been through hell and back.
