Preview: 2016 Giro d’Italia — Stage 13

Palmanova to Cividale del Friuli

Friday, May 20
161 kilometers

Stage 13 will remain entirely in the Julian Alps and the Natisone Valleys. After the start in Palmanova, the route will tackle five climbs, including the Montemaggiore (Mount Matajur), Monte San Martino, and Drenchia/Crai before dropping into Cividale. Then the route will climb Cima Porzùs, eight kilometers in length and as steep as 16 percent, before dropping down and climbing immediately toward the town of Valle, a climb of six kilometers at an average of eight percent. After the descent, the finish line is just six kilometers away. It’s a stage on which the Giro won’t necessarily be won but could very well be lost.
Note: On May 22, the Giro d’Italia Gran Fondo will be held from Cividale to Cividale del Friuli, on much the same route as the pro race.
