Cyclocross World Cup rounds in Waterloo and Dublin cancelled for 2020

The UCI unveiled a revised cyclocross World Cup calendar on Wednesday, announcing that the three events had been cancelled for 2020, bringing the total count of World Cup events down from 14 to 11.

The World Cup was initially set to kick off in Waterloo, Wisconsin, at Trek headquarters on October 4, but that event has been scratched for 2020. As such, the United States will have no ‘cross World Cup events on the calendar for the first time since 2014.

Also called off was the World Cup round in Dublin, Ireland, originally planned for October 18. The Zonhoven World Cup, initially planned for October 25 – the same day as Paris-Roubaix, the final stage of the Giro d’Italia, and the sixth stage of the Vuelta a España – has been rescheduled for December 13, replacing the Antwerp round of the World Cup series.

The revised calendar will now get underway in Overijse, Belgium, on November 1, mostly avoiding what would have been significant overlap with the revised 2020 road calendar.

“I regret the absence of rounds such as those in Waterloo and Dublin, which fortunately we will see the following season,” said UCI president David Lappartient. “After the calendars for road and for UCI mountain bike events, another important section of the UCI International Calendar can be revealed. This is an excellent sign for the athletes and all participants of our events. As for all events with new dates, they remain dependent on the health situation in their respective host countries.”

Tomas Van Den Spiegel, CEO of Flanders Classics, which organizes the World Cup calendar, explained that the decision to postpone the season start to November 1 came about “on the one hand because of modifications to the road season which will see some highlights in October and on the other hand because of uncertainties that still exist over measures that will be necessary, both at national and international level, to keep the Covid-19 pandemic under control.”

In its statement, the UCI said that further announcements “concerning the other calendars, mainly ‘off-road,'” were coming soon.
