Continental’s new GP5000 options include a ‘transparent’ tan sidewall

Continental unveil new tan sidewall tire, good news for anyone who missed last years limited edition. Plus a new 30mm GP5000 for E-Bikes

Continental has announced three new versions of its popular Grand Prix 5000 tyre. Perhaps the most interesting of the new tyres is a new color option Continental has named “transparent”.

The transparent GP5000 first popped up on online retailer Wiggle, which appears to have been something of a mistake. We reached out to Continental for the full details of these still formally unreleased tyres.

Despite the name, the tyre itself is not transparent, rather the name refers to construction that leaves the nylon carcass visible, for a darker tan sidewall effect. The transparent colour will be available in 25 or 28mm clincher only options.

Although Continental has offered a limited edition tan sidewall version of the GP5000 last year, the GP 5000 TdF LTD 2020 (now sold out), that tyre differed from the regular GP5000 in that the tan effect was courtesy of an extra layer of rubber used on the sidewall resulting in a brighter tan colour.

The new transparent tyre is identical to the regular GP5000 in every other aspect of the popular all-round road tyre. Continental has retained the same Black Chili compound, active comfort technology, Vectran puncture breaker, and lazer grip, meaning the same rolling and puncture-resistant properties.

Continental also announced a new 30mm clincher GP5000 which has been specifically designed for e-bikes and is approved for speeds up to 50kph / 31mph. Continental relied on its 100+year experience with moped and motorbike tyres in designing a tyre approved for e-bike usage. The additional driving forces on an e-bike or S-Pedelec are said to result in increased wear rates. According to Continental, the high-quality structure and puncture protection in the E50 GP5000 protects against this premature tyre wearing.

The complete Grand Prix 5000 range

The Grand Prix 5000 transparent and E50 tyres are available in limited quantities now and priced at £59.99 / €62.90
