Organizers announced with less than 100 km to go in the Gent-Wevelgem men’s race on Sunday and shortly before the start of the women’s race that the route of both events would see changes in the finale due to a fire.
The original route passed through the city of Menen, a little under 5 km from Wevelgem, but a fire at a recycling facility there required organizers to reroute the race.
“Due to a fire at Galloo in Menen the passage through the city centre of Menen is suspended and the last 5km of the race are being replaced by an alternative route,” organizers said.
“This for both the men’s and women’s race. The finish in Wevelgem remains unchanged.”
The changes added 1.1 km to the route, altering the approach into Wevelgem, making the men’s race 248.6 km in total and the women’s race 142.8 km in total.
