Just when it looked as though healing was coming to the scarred relationship between the grand tour organizers and the Union Cycliste Internationale, the wounds just opened again. After the recent Giro d’Italia and April’s Paris-Roubaix were successfully run under UCI regulations as part of the international body’s Historical Calendar, it seemed that the upcoming Tour de France might be similarly promoted.
2008 Olympic track cycling team nearly set
Three American track riders are locked and loaded for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and five spots are still up for grabs. Californian Sarah Hammer, Coloradan Taylor Phinney and Washington’s Jennie Reed all own spots for Beijing based on their 2008 results. USA Cycling will hold a talent camp June 15-16 at the ADT Events Center in Carson, California, to decide the final spots for the games.

Memorial Fund established for fallen cyclists’ wife, newborn son
It’s been half a year since Mike Janelle died in his sleep of sudden heart failure at his home in Vail, Colorado. A favorite in the mountain and endurance road cycling communities, Janelle was known just as well for his wide smile and large personality as his tenacious racing style. He was a member of three winning Race Across America teams and recorded a plethora of victories in Rocky Mountain-region mountain bike races. Just 40, Janelle passed away five months before the birth of his son, Mike Jr., who was born on April 7.

The Blue River Century allows cyclists, volunteers and sponsors in the Front Range and Summit County areas to do something bold in the face of cancer by supporting the mission of the LAF to inspire and empower people affected by cancer.
Fixed gear team to take on RAAM
The Adventures for the Cure (AFC) cycling team has entered the four-man relay category for the world’s longest bicycle race, the Race Across America, known simply as “RAAM.” This race has been called the world’s toughest bicycle race, covering over 3,000 miles from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD. The route is 1,000 miles longer than the 2008 Tour de France, and contains more than 100,000 feet of climbing. The race begins on June 11, 2008, in Oceanside, and ends on approximately June 18th in Annapolis.

Aurora Health Care Wisconsin Cycling Series expands
The Aurora Health Care Wisconsin Cycling Series is pleased to announce that they have added an additional day of racing to its calendar expanding it to three days. Bill Ochowicz and Mike Martens, Race Directors for the Giro d’ Grafton presented by Grafton State Bank and Ozaukee Bank, and Paul Weaver, Race Director for the Sheboygan Harbor Centre Family Day and Bike Race presented by Bank First National have joined forces with Andy Crater, Race Director for Team Wheel and Sprocket, to add an additional race on Friday June 20, 2008.

UCI threatens sanctions for Tour riders

Metlushenko and Teutenberg take first race of Philly Week
Launching what his competitors called a late-race hail Mary, Ukraine’s Yuri Metlushenko scored a razor-thin sprint win in Tuesday’s Lehigh Valley Classic. Aussie Karl Menzies (Health Net-Maxxis) was second by half a tire width at the opening round of the 2008 Commerce Bank Triple Crown of Cycling, with American Brad Huff (Jelly Belly) trailing home in third.

Women’s Field Fills at the Nature Valley Grand Prix
For the first time in its history, the women’s field at Minnesota’s Nature Valley Grand Prix, part of the Great River Energy Bicycle Festival, has filled and registration has been closed early. At 145 riders, the Nature Valley Grand Prix field is likely to be the largest women’s race of the year, compared with 140 for the Montreal World Cup, 120 for the Liberty Classic and 84 for the Mount Hood Classic.
