Androni Giocattoli riders finish 1-2 in the opening stage of the five-day, six-stage Italian race

Androni Giocattoli riders finished 1-2 in stage 1a at Settimana Intern Coppi e Bartali on Wednesday.

Fabio Felline finished the 99.5-kilometer stage in 2:22:15, with his teammate Mattia Gavazzi one second behind. Alessandro Bazzana (UnitedHealthcare) was third in the stage that went around Gatteo, Italy.

Stage 1b, an 11.2km team time trial, will be contested later today from Sant’Angelo to Gatteo Mare.

Alessandro Mazzi (Utensilnord Ora24.eu) escaped from the peloton 22km into the stage, and he rode solo nearly the entire morning before he was reeled in with 12km to go. From there, a group of 80 riders pedaled into the finish, with Felline breaking away 500 meters before the line.

Following the team time trial, the race will resume Thursday with the 162km stage 2 from Gatteo to Sogliano al Rubicone.
