At last, the massive mountains of the Alps and Pyrénées are behind the riders of the Tour de France. After a brutal six-day stretch of racing, the riders will have one more rest day on Monday, followed by the final six stages which will take them to the finish in Paris. With 14 stages in the books, American Lance Armstrong leaves the mountains with an almost insurmountable lead in the overall race. Armstrong was the dominant force in the mountains, but on Sunday, the weekend in the Pyrénées concluded with a hugely popular win for Euskaltel-Euskadi rider Roberto Laiseka.

Of the three Pyrénéan stages, Sunday’s race from Tarbes to Luz Ardiden came closest to the cycling-mad Basque region on the other side of the Spanish border. And for this first-ever Tour for the Basque Euskaltel team, its supporters were out in force. The three main climbs on Sunday’s 144.5km stage were lined with thousands of fans from that region, decked out in orange T-shirts — the Euskaltel-Euskadi team colors — and fanatically waving Basque flags at every vehicle going past.

The team, which is sponsored by the Basque telecommunications company and the Basque government, has been on the rise since its inception in 1994, and 2001 marked its first year as one of the 20 Division I teams in the world. Its strength over the years has been its stable of talented young riders, including Joseba Beloki, who last year moved to the Festina team and finished third overall in the Tour and this year sits fourth as the leader of the ONCE team.

Over the winter, Euskaltel acquired David Etxebarria, who was the team leader for the Tour, but on Sunday it was Laiseka, the heart and soul of the team, who delivered Euskaltel its biggest win ever.

The 32-year-old rider has been with the team for eight years — since the very start — and has delivered some big wins before, including a pair of stage wins at the Tour of Spain. But on Sunday, his win showed that the team deserved its spot in the biggest race in the world.

“It’s a great accomplishment, for me and the team,” he said after his victory atop the ski station at Luz Ardiden.

Sunday’s mountainous stage would be the last that suited the team filled with climbing specialists, so Euskaltel was definitely aiming for the stage win on a hot day under a blazing sun.

Julich’s group had 3:20 on the peloton as they started up Col d’Aspin.

When the most dangerous breakaway of the day went, though, there were no Euskaltel riders to be found. That move began under the impetus of the rising young Swiss star, Sven Montgomery (La Française des Jeux), and it also included Jean Cyril Robin (Bonjour), Wladimir Belli (Fassa Bortolo), Jens Heppner (Telekom), Andreas Kloden (Telekom), Mario Aerts (Lotto Adecco), Oscar Pozzi (Fassa Bortolo), Stephane Goubert (Jean Delatour), David Moncoutie (Cofidis) and Bobby Julich (Crédit Agricole).

That group began the first big challenge of the day — the Col d’Aspin — with a couple of chasers behind, and the peloton at 3:20 behind. Leading the main field were the U.S. Postal Service, protecting Armstrong’s yellow jersey, and the Euskaltel team, fighting hard to pull out the stage win.

At 12km long and an average grade of 6.5 percent, the Col d’Aspin is a stiff test — particularly on a hot day with temperatures in the 80s — but even bigger tests would follow right on its heels. At 6916 feet, the next climb, the Col du Tourmalet was the highest peak in this year’s Tour, and that was followed by the finishing climb to Luz Ardiden, 13.4km averaging 7.5 percent, with long stretches of 10 percent and above.

On the stark, exposed slopes of the Tourmalet, the lead group began to split up, with first Heppner, then Robin, Kloeden and Julich all falling off the pace by the top. That left a lead group of six to contest the long, 18.5km winding descent that began on the barren rocky slopes at the top before finally dropping back down to green forested valley below.

Still on the uphill side of the Tourmalet, the main peloton was seeing a familiar scene unfold: Telekom paced Ullrich most of the way to the top of the Tourmalet before he launched an attack with 1km to go. And as in the previous days, his surge put everyone in trouble — except Armstrong.

By the top, the lead group had re-formed, with about 20 riders in the fold, including Armstrong, Ullrich, Laiseka, Beloki and Andreï Kivilev (Cofidis), who was hoping to cling to his second-place overall.

When they hit the final climb to Luz Ardiden, the lead group was down to three — Aerts, Belli and Moncoutié — but Armstrong’s group was only about a minute behind.

Laiseka launched his attack almost as soon as they hit the 13.4km, and by the midway point, he had caught and dropped the leaders, with only Belli remaining between him and Armstrong and Ullrich’s group.

Behind, Armstrong once again had faithful teammates Roberto Heras and José Luis Rubiera to pace him up the climb. By the 4km-to-go mark, it was just Armstrong, Heras and Ullrich behind Laiseka and Belli; all of the other contenders had fallen off the pace. This time, though, there would be no attack from Armstrong. Instead, he and Heras were towing the German away from Kivilev and Beloki, and into second-place overall. At the finish, Ullrich sprinted in just ahead of the American, and the two exchanged a quick handshake, showing their mutual respect.

But the day began to Laiseka and Euskaltel. Laiseka celebrated a joyous victory in front of thousands and thousands of his home fans, who now had a team of their very own to cheer when they crossed the border to experience the Tour de France.

Laiseka, Euskaltel and all their supporters had what they had come to the Pyrénées for — a coveted stage win in the Tour de France.

The epic 'dangerous stages' are done, Armstrong said after the day.

And as the race left the mountains, Armstrong, too, had what he wanted: the yellow jersey. All that’s left now are six more stages, and the finish in Paris.

“It’s obvious that today the dangerous stages are over,” he said. “There’s no more epic stages like the last three. It’s a relief today.”

With his team gaining strength with each day in the mountains, Armstrong was confident for the final week. “The only thing is we really have to stay together as a team,” he said. “Have all eight guys up there and never panic.”

Before that final push to Paris begins, Armstrong and the rest of the peloton will have another well-deserved rest day on Monday before Stage 15 on Tuesday, the first of three long stages with lots of small hills along the way.

Race notes:

After Fred Rodriguez abandoned the race yesterday, his team said that he just hasn’t been able to find his form during this year’s Tour, a problem he has had for much of the season.

Jonathan Vaughters, who had two solid rides in the Alps but has slipped in the Pyrénées, told VeloNews on Sunday that he caught a stomach virus on the rest day Thursday, and just hasn’t been feeling well the past few days.
