Giro d’Italia: McEwen has a perfect day

For sure, the 177-kilometer ride from Civitella in Val di Chiana to Spoleto, featured one of the flattest courses of this year’s Giro, but the peloton was treated to a challenging finishing circuit that seemed to suit the Lotto-Domo rider’s talents more than anyone else’s in the peloton.
By the time riders had completed three trips around the 7.3km loop through Spoleto, the steep 1.4km hill had taken its toll on some of the field’s better sprinters, Mario Cipollini (Domina Vacanze) and Ivan Quaranta (Formaggi Pinzolo) chief among them. Then the twisting turns near the finish neutralized the formidable Fassa Bortolo lead-out train of Alessandro Petacchi.

Indeed, as Australia’s one-time Tour de France points jersey winner charged to the line after the day’s final turn, he had no idea that the race’s top sprinter, Petacchi, found himself boxed in and mired in traffic several bike lengths behind.
McEwen charged off the front, easily holding off German Olaf Pollack (Gerolsteiner) and Italian Marco Zanotti (Vini Caldirola) on the uphill finish to grab the stage as well as wresting the Giro’s ciclamino points jersey from double-stage winner Petacchi.”I won today thanks to the power in my legs and my will power to survive on the three circuits and in the final curves,” McEwen confidently observed after the finish, adding that he would have easily beat the Fassa Bortolo man, too, had it been a head-to-head contest.

Banged, battered, but not out
The day started on a high note for Cipollini fans as the Giro-stage-win record holder arrived for the day’s sign-in at the start. There had been some question as to whether the former world champion would continue in the Giro after Wednesday’s ugly finish-line crash. Remarkably, Cipo’ managed to escape with only cuts and bruises… and 14 stitches on his shin and elbow.
As is a tradition on flat stages at the Giro, the sprinters’ teams controlled the tempo, monitoring the front of the peloton and holding the pace at a comfortable 31kph for the opening hour. But by the 38km mark some riders in the peloton made it clear that they weren’t content to let the day end with another “train race” to the line and wanted to try their hands at an escape.
A group of 21 riders – including Petacchi and American Fred Rodriguez (Acqua & Sapone) – moved away, but never managed to gain more 30 seconds and by the feed zone at 85km, the last remnants of the group were pulled back.
A short while later, however, the upcoming Intergiro sprint (104km), triggered a series of attacks and created a slight gap at the front of the field. The split was small, but it created the opportunity for another break that, this time, seemed to hold some real potential.
The break – Rodriguez and Bo Hamburger (Acqua & Sapone), Magnus Bäckstedt (Alessio-Bianchi) Raffaele Illiano (Colombia-Selle Italia), Dario David Cioni (Fassa Bortolo), Luis Laverde and Corrado Serina (Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave), Andrej Hauptman (Lampre), Christophe Brandt and Ief Verbrugghe (Lotto-Domo), Michael Albasini and Uros Murn (Phonak), Manuele Mori (Saunier Duval), Dean Podgornik (Tenax) and Thomas Ziegler (Gerolsteiner) – had plenty of horsepower, but it also contained an unwelcome guest, a serious GC threat in Cioni. With the former mountain biker sitting in seventh in the overall standings at 52 seconds, it was clear that the Saeco team of overall race leader Gilberto Simoni would not allow the break to get clear.

“He wasn’t doing much there,” Bäckstedt told VeloNews. “He was just in the group to keep an eye on things for Petacchi. Of course with him up there, I wasn’t going to help, since we had our own GC guys (Franco Pellizotti and Andrea Noè) to worry about.”
Indeed, over the course of the next 10km, the men in the break were far from presenting a picture of cooperation. A series of small attacks finally split the group in two and Bäckstedt joined up with Hamburger, Ziegler, Mori, Podgornik and Albasini in trying to organize a stage-winning escape.
“Our chances weren’t all that great,” Bäckstedt, winner of this year’s Paris-Roubaix, said. “With Cioni back in the field, the Fassa team really kept a close watch on us.”
The six were allowed a maximum advantage of 1:30 with 30km remaining. That lead had evaporated by the time the escapees hit the streets of Spoleto and they were swept up by a Fassa Bortolo-led charge with 15km remaining.

The Saeco team, meanwhile experienced a moment of tension, when Damiano Cunego (second overall, 13 seconds behind Simoni) suffered a flat just as the main field was bring the escapees back into the fold and working its way up the narrow streets on a 1.4km rise just before the finish area. Like clockwork, however, the team sent a small group of riders back and the young rider was quickly brought back into the field. The hill, however, took its toll on others, as Cipollini and Quaranta both popped off the back of the field as the race charged over the day’s only climb.
Prologue winner Brad McGee (FDJeux.com) made a valiant effort to put his pursuit skills to the test with 10 km to go, attacking hard off the front and bringing along Phonak’s Alexandre Moos and Ruggero Marzoli of Acqua & Sapone. McGee was clearly the strongest of the three as the other two struggled to stay on his wheel. That lack of coordination, a tiring McGee and a hard-charging peloton ensured that the break would not last too long.
In the closing kilometers, the Fassa Bortolo team began its well-rehearsed ritual of setting Petacchi up for another sprint win. The long line of blue and white jerseys marked the front of the field, while others scrambled about in the field trying their best to latch on to the back of the train and, preferably, on to Petacchi’s wheel.
But the narrow, twisting approach to the finish was not an ideal launching pad for the likes of Petacchi and his Fassa squad. Instead, it favored someone with the exceptional bike-handling skills of a street fighter like McEwen. That difference became clear as the fast-moving peloton hit the final corner before a slightly uphill finishing straight.
Locked onto the wheel of his lead-out man, Petacchi was suddenly boxed in – stuck between a swarm of riders and the barriers – as he hit the last turn.
McEwen, unaware of the traffic problems Petacchi was having, charged as hard as he could, racing past Zanotti and celebrating his win as he looked to his right and saw that he had beat the Italian to the line. That celebration almost came too early as Pollack – who held the maglia rosa for a day – came charging up hard on McEwen’s left side. But the Aussie’s momentum carried him across the line, and Pollack’s only recourse was to smack his bars in frustration.
McEwen, reflecting on his good day’s work, said: “The uphill finish was tough.“After the last bend I found myself out on my own, I didn’t realize Petacchi was stuck. He’s very strong but no one is unbeatable.”
Resplendent in his new points jersey, McEwen said that he knew the day suited him and he felt confident in his ability to take on Petacchi, whether or not his rival had been able to make the final charge.
“Everybody talks about Petacchi because he was the best sprinter last year but he’s beatable as I’ve proved in the past,” McEwen said. “I beat him in a head-to-head sprint on stage 4 last year and the reason I won today was that I was the strongest. I survived in the final corners and had the speed to win while he didn’t.”
The general classification remained the same, with Simoni retaining a 13-second lead over Cunego as both men finished in the field. Landbouwkrediet’s Yaroslav Popovych remains in third, 21 seconds behind.
Cipollini received warm applause when he came in three minutes behind the main peloton after his crash on Wednesday. “That was hell,” declared the 2002 world champion, who has won a record 42 stages in this event. “Hopefully I’ll be feeling better tomorrow. Fortunately the fans are amazing!”
Friday’s 164km ride from Spoleto to Valmontone offers the sprinters another shot at a stage win.
