A presentation Thursday evening at the Italian Embassy in Washington will attempt to drum up support for a Giro d’Italia start in the nation’s capital in 2012.
Supporters of the plan, including D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty (an avid cyclist) need to sell the idea to local businesses by explaining how a Giro prologue would affect the local economy, Terri Washington of the Washington Convention and Sports Authority told VeloNews.
Fenty met with Giro officials in December. The Italian news site Il sole 24 Ore reports that officials are contemplating holding the Giro team presentation, prologue, and first stage in Washington in 2012.
