IOWA CITY, Iowa (VN) —Helen Wyman (Kona Factory) rode away from the women’s field to win round two of Jingle Cross Rock on Saturday, while Tim Johnson (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld) rebounded from Friday’s DNF to take the flowers in the men’s second outing.
British ’cross champ Wyman once again proved unstoppable on Saturday at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies teammates Amanda Miller and Carmen McNellis Small made a battle of it, but had to settle for second and third, respectively. The two crossed the line hand in hand, 28 seconds down, to round out the podium.
In the men’s race, Johnson and Ryan Trebon went one-two with Ben Berden (Raleigh-Clement) taking third on the hilly, windswept circuit.
After crashing out of Friday’s race Johnson sprang to life on Saturday, crossing more than a half minute ahead of his teammate on a course that he said served up “as tough a downhill as we ride on any course in the United States all year.”
Johnson took full advantage of that profile, bombing down Mt. Krumpit and opening a large gap that the field could not close. He hit the line 33 seconds in front of Trebon and nearly a minute ahead of Berden.
The Jingle Cross Rock weekend concludes on Sunday.
