Marcel Kittel (Argos-Shimano) won stage 4 of the Eneco Tour Thursday over Jurgen Roelandts (Lotto-Belisol) and Giacomo Nizzolo (RadioShack-Nissan), who finished second and third, respectively.
Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) was fourth, with Olympic bronze medalist Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) fifth.
Boonen assumed the overall lead from Orica-GreenEdge’s Jens Keukeleire with three days of racing remaining.
“It was very hard — at 800 meters from the line I was still in 15th position,” said Kittel. “Then Tom Veelers and John Degenkolb brought me forward. At 500 meters I even had a short moment to rest. I don’t know how they exactly did that, but it was fantastic.”
