Pua Mata and Ben Sonntag rang in the inaugural Grand Junction Off-Road on Sunday with wins in the professional women’s and men’s races, respectively.
With an equal share of the $20,000 purse on the line, Mata (Sho-Air-Cannondale) distanced Erin Huck (Tokyo Joe’s) and Chloe Woodruff (Crank Brothers) to win the 40-mile race in Grand Junction, Colorado. Mata finished in 3:36:21, with Huck at 9:30 and Woodruff at 13:07.
In the men’s race, Sonntag (American Interbanc Cannondale) out-dueled 20-year-old Sepp Kuss (Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory) for the win. Sonntag finished in 3:04:03, distancing Kuss by 1:46. Kris Sneddon (Kona) was third, at 4:01.
