Reed romps at track nationals

Carson, Calif. (August 13, 2005)-Jennie Reed rode to her third individual national championship of the week with a victory in the women’s keirin, adding another stars and stripes jersey to her earlier wins in the 500 meter time trial and the sprint as the 2005 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships concluded in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Reed’s sweep of the three sprint-oriented events clearly distinguished her as the strongest sprinter in the field and earned her the title of most decorated rider of the week – man or woman – in terms in individual elite performances.

In Saturday’s keirin, Reed outsprinted Becky Quinn, Anna Webb, Annette Hanson, Anna Lang and Heather Vanvalkenburg in the final.

The 27-year-old Reed, a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team, also placed second in the women’s team sprint along with teammate Annette Hanson.

Also on Saturday, the top-ranked CKR Racing squad of Kevin Belz, Christian Stahl and Ryan Nelman rode to a national title in the men’s team sprint over the trio of Michael Blatchford, Giddeon Massie and Aaron Kacala of Veloworx. The CKR Racing team clocked a time of 47.058 seconds in the three-lap, 750-meter head-to-head final against Veloworx, which clocked a 47.872.

The team sprint victory gave the 22-year-old Stahl his fourth national title of the week after capturing the elite title in the kilometer time trial and U23 championships in both the kilo and sprint.

In the women’s two-lap team sprint, the duo of Martha Dunne and Anna Lang joined forces to sprint to a national title, clocking a time of 37.629 seconds over a distance of 500 meters to edge Reed and Hanson.

In the men’s madison, the strongest pair in the 160 lap, 40km race was veteran rider Colby Pearce and Chad Hartley of the TIAA-CREF team. The twosome paired up to collect 24 points and lap several teams numerous times to ride away with the title. TIAA-CREF notched 15 points with three intermediate sprint victories and added another nine with a handful of additional top-four finishes.

The TIAA-CREF squad, a UCI registered trade team on the road, sent a handful of riders to join Pearce as it ventured in to the track racing foray with relative success scoring podium finishes in the team pursuit and men’s points race.
