Sager, Williams repeat wins at ‘Cross Crusade

Jason Sager secured his third win in as many weeks in the River City ‘Cross Crusade series in Oregon.

A pack of four emerged from the frenzied start at the third installment of the series held at Ranier High School October 19. Sager (SagerSports.com), Kona/Team S&M’s Erik Tonkin, Sean Babcock (Team S&M), and Ryan Iddings of (Lapiexe) jockeyed for position through five laps before dropping Iddings.

With two laps to go, it was Sager and Tonkin; Sager charged and Tonkin responded. Halfway through the bell lap, Tonkin flatted, opening up the lead for Sager. At the finish, it was Babcock in second, followed by Iddings and Vanilla Bicycles’ Shannon Skerrit, with Tonkin in fifth.

Wendy Williams (River City Bicycles) fought for control of the women’s race over the rolling, grassy
course under a cool October sun. Emily VanMeter (River City Bicycles), Williams and Alice
Pennington (Desalvo Custom Cycles Racing) led over a row of six barriers near the end of the first lap.

As they charged up the steep hill at the end of lap two, it was Williams in front, followed by
Pennington and Mazza. Mazza was tenacious in her effort to stick close to Williams, but a crash in lap four left her 20 seconds behind with a bloody nose. Pennington cruised in for third, followed by
VanMeter and Megan Farris (River City Bicycles).

The series continues with races four and five next week at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds near the
coastal town of Astoria.
