Tour Pro Bike: Bradley Wiggins’ Pinarello Dogma

We take a look at the bike of another unfortunate early Tour retiree, Brad Wiggins

Like Alexander Vinokourov (whose bike we looked at yesterday), Bradley Wiggins had an early exit from this year’s Tour de France.

The reigning British road and time trial champ had impressed in June with his overall victory at the Dauphine. His Pinarello definitely stood out from the rest of his Team Sky teammates’ machines. Small touches show the level of attention that Pinarello and team mechanics paid to getting his bike just right.

2011 — The change from blue to green for Team Sky is to bring attention to Sky Rainforest Rescue. Though there is nothing particularly environmentally friendly about a professional cycling team, the effort is a worthwhile one.

2011 — That’s right, team mechanics lined up the bikes in numerical order. Super pro bordering on obsessive compulsive.

2011 — Bradley Wiggins is the reigning British road and time trial champion. Pinarello delivered a new Dogma to match his kit. The tall spindly rider rides with a seat height of 82 cm and reach from his saddle nose to his bars is 63 cm.

2011 — Wiggins likes double wrapped bartape on his 44cm wide Deda handlebars. The all-white cockpit looks great but surely adds to the workload of those that must keep it clean. The stem is 14 centimeters long and sits directly on the headset cap.

2011 — Wiggins uses O-Symmetric chainrings on both his tt and road bikes. They make the gear he pedals larger between 2 and 5 o’clock in the pedal stroke and smaller in the weaker sections. They also make shifting a little difficult. To help this, O-Symmetric supplies an adapter for the front derailleur (the silver aluminum piece betweent the frame braze-on and derailleur) that raises and shifts the derailleur aft on the bike. A K-Edge helps avoid dropped chains.

2011 — Elite’s carbon cages have nicely curved lines. The blue-anodized aluminum cage bolts save weight and keep the Union Jack theme alive.

2011 — A white frame is a mechanic’s nightmare, but Team Sky mechanics have Wiggo’s British champ bike looking immaculate. Wiggins had an 11×23 cassette on for the early flat stages of the Tour.

2011 — Wiggins uses long 177.5mm crank arms. He also uses long spindle Speedplay pedals while most of his teammates use Shimano pedals. Riders on Sky can use non-sponsor equipment if they have a medical reason to do so.

2011 — These stickers are starting to show up more and more as pros receive frames that are recently developed.

2011 — Wiggins is definitely a mod, not a rocker, and the cool Union Jack scooter seals the deal. The custom Prologo TR Scratch saddle really finishes the look of the national champs’ bike.
