It may be an awkward name, but Assos’s SS.laaLalaiJersey_evo8 is a sleek, race-cut jersey that’s great for hot summer days.
The laaLalai features Assos’s racingFit cut, which the company aptly describes as a second-skin fit. In addition to the snug, slightly compressive fit, the jersey is aggressively cut with a cycling position in mind — the shoulders are shaped to be far more forward than upright, and the front of the jersey is understandably short if you’re standing up or walking around, which means little to no material bunching when you’re bent over the handlebars. Due to the short hem, it may not be ideal if you prefer shorts over bibs or are planning to stop and walk around. I found myself continually tugging the front down to keep my belly covered when I wore shorts or found myself off the bike.

The bonded hem has a small bit of elastic beneath the rear pockets but is otherwise free of seams. Similarly, the sleeves have a clean, laser-cut finish. This reduction in seams not only reduces bulk for a lightweight feel but should also help with the jersey’s drag-reduction goals. A bit counter to the stripped down-approach of the seams, the zippers on the front of the jersey and the rear pocket are surprisingly substantial with a somewhat large Assos-branded zipper pull.
The back panel uses Assos’s Stabilizator S7 Knit fabric to help with temperature regulation. This white, semi-sheer material is very breathable, but isn’t thin and flimsy-feeling. Unless you’re wearing a base layer, expect your sports bra to be visible through this back panel.
To maximize the functionality of the rear pockets, Assos sewed in a small extension panel at the base of the pockets. This creates a surprising and welcome amount of storage space for such a race-focused, stripped-down jersey. This highly functional addition does, however, add some bulk and lumpiness to a jersey that otherwise has incredibly clean lines. There’s also a zippered security pocket that easily fits a Samsung S9.
The laaLalai jersey is quintessentially Assos: bright colors, clean lines, and quality material and construction. If you’re looking for a well-made jersey for warm-weather rides and typically ride in bibs, this should certainly be a contender.
