Rumors of Canyon’s move the US were rampant for the last few seasons. The direct to consumer brand removed speculation this summer with an official announcement that spring 2017 would see the unveiling of Canyon to US riders, but that was about all the information that was forthcoming. Canyon has dropped another breadcrumb – Canyon road disc brakes.

Canyon initially seemed eager to develop disc brakes for the road with prototypes being shown as early as 2006, but they have since lagged behind other brands that have adopted the technology whole heartedly. They aim to change that in 2017, rather than drop disc road upgrades piecemeal during the year, all three of their main road lines will have disc offerings – Aeroad, Ultimate and Endurance.
Canyon claims, “How to apply disc brake technology to the road has been a topic of heated discussion for years.” While whether or not disc brakes have a place in road has been a “heated discussion”, how to apply them? Not so much. Canyon is using similar language to other brands in its marketing, citing, “All models have been re-engineered from the ground up and thoroughly tested by our pro riders and engineers so that they offer the same ride and handling performance Canyon road bikes are known for.”
Canyon and disc was a foregone conclusion, what remains are questions about on sale dates, exactly which specs will come to the US, pricing and can Canyon solve the distribution and delivery issues it has suffered in Europe.
We recently tested both the Canyon Aeroroad and Ultimate rim brake bikes and were incredibly impressed with their capabilities. We chronicled the unboxing experience European riders have here, but Canyon was quick to point out US customer will have a different experience they have yet to reveal. Stay tuned as that story develops.
