First look: 3T’s disc fork and ‘cross bars

3T is jumping into the cyclocross-specific gear market with a brand new bar, the Ergoterra, and disc-compatible fork dubbed Luteus. Both were set to hit shops earlier this year, but are just now becoming available.

The disc-only Luteus was first spotted during last year’s trade show season — just a few months after the UCI changed its cyclocross rules to allow disc brakes — but is only now making it to market.

The Luteus is designed around a 160mm rotor, with reinforcement at the post-mount brake mounts to compensate for the stresses imparted by discs. A recessed channel along the outer face with two integrated fixing points allows for tidy cable and hydraulic line routing, minimizing the risk of damaging a line. The dropouts have alloy inserts for extra durability.

Tire clearance is excellent, with a minimum of 17mm all around a UCI-maximum 33mm tire. The steerer tube is tapered 1-1/2” to 1-1/8” for more precise steering and braking.

The Ergoterra drop bar uses the same drop and reach as the Ergosum road bar, but flairs the drops out for forearm clearance and better control while in the drops. It also includes a reinforced central section for running top-mounted brake levers.

The drops are angled outwards by 6 degrees, and width measurements are taken at the widest point. That means the 45-cm model is a 42cm at the hoods, and the 47cm model is actually a 44cm. Clamp diameter is 31.8mm.

As with the Ergosum, the drops are shaped to allow for the vertical alignment of the brake/shift levers at their mounting point (creating a nice flat top) while also providing easy access to the controls while in the drops.

Price on the Luteus fork falls in line with 3T’s other high-end fork offerings at $575. The Ergoterra bars will set you back $325.
