The look is a love-it or hate-it industrial style, obviously not for everyone. But the POC Trabec Race piqued our fancy at Interbike this year, and we simply had to give one a try.
It’s a bit heavy and doesn’t have the huge vents that match so well with our lycra outfits — a great excuse to bust out the baggies and the bigger bike.
For AM/trail riding, we’re hoping the Trabec fits the bill. The back wraps low for extra protection, with a fit more like a skateboard helmet than a roadie lid. The body itself is designed with an Aramid reinforced EPS core for durability, and the hard polycarbonate shell doesn’t have any seams to split.
The only difference between the Trabec and Trabec Race models is the amount of Aramid reinforcement — the $180 Race version gets the extra protection. Sixteen large vents should help keep air moving.
Fit for our medium/large seems pretty standard — I usually wear medium helmets and this one fits well, albeit with the rear ratchet dialed in pretty far. That ratchet is easy to use, even with full-finger gloves. The adjustable visor is easy to use too, and moves freely but firmly enough to stay in place. Pads use Polygiene, an anti-microbial material that should fend off helmet stank at least for a little while.
