Orbea Brings Custom Paint to the ORCA with MyO

October 29, 2015 – A bike should reflect who we are as riders and people. A small, featherweight climber should be on a different bike than a six-foot-plus sprinter. A rider that searches out backroads and dirt paths should be on a different bike than someone that lives for the club ride and city limit sprints. Happily, we have a lot of choices these days, but should that be where our ability to match bike to rider ends?

Full custom is a nice option, but spendy, especially if you want lightweight carbon and not everyone needs custom. Custom paint is a cool option as well, but it can add hundreds of dollars to an already lofty purchase. How about somewhere in the middle? Customizable paint and component options on a stock frame without custom pricing? Orbea is offering up a program they call MyO which allows you to choose the paint for five different areas, from 12 different colors, as well as matte or gloss options and seven different logo options. While not the same as full custom (flames are not an option, thankfully!) the amount of permutations and combinations is staggering.

We recently went through the process to order an Orca we will be testing in the near future. Right now MyO is only available on the Orca, but it’s not reserved for top of the line models only. You can customize the paint on a $4000 Orca M20 or a $9300 Orca M-LTDI and every Orca in between. On the build you can buy an Ultegra spec Orca and spend your money where it matters, by upgrading to some high end carbon wheels. The entire cockpit, as well as cassette gearing, can also be customized.

But the real fun begins with the paint choices. Color Area One provides the main frame color, while Area Two colors the head tube, under the top tube and seat tube and so on for three more sections, until every square millimeter has your own paint choices from 12 colors. Then it’s on to logos. Only a few options exist for logos and we’d love to see this expanded greatly to more colors and even the option to pull logos entirely.

Of course, the last touch is adding your name to the frame, in the same spot Orbea’s World Tour Pros on Cofidis put their names. After that, you choose your local Orbea dealer and they handle the purchase and delivery in approximately four weeks with no up charge for the custom paint.

While we could ask for more logo options, even more paint location and color options, as well as a 360degree spin view of your paint scheme, the magic of the Orbea MyO program is simplicity, expediency and of course, price. A custom painted Orca with your name on the top tube for $4000 in four weeks? If you just want a MyO Orca frame, you can do that to for $3100. The online process is intuitive and fast, letting you play with multiple color schemes very quickly.

Our custom peloton Orbea is an Orca M-LTD with mechanical Dura-Ace and Vision Metron 40 carbon clinchers for $8000. The paint scheme was designed to mimic our latest jersey – a black background with blue, white and pink accents.
