Peloton Week in Tech: August 6th – 12th

The new 2017 line from Kona, a sneak peak of the Canyon Ultimate review coming, a versatile Thule commuting backpack from the Paddock and more!

Road cycling from Rio is behind us, but the electrifying bikes and personalities on the track are coming into view for week two of the Olympics. The Peloton Week in Tech started with a preview of the Canyon Ultimate review coming in a future issue and a look back at Davis Phinney’s first Tour win aboard his steel Murray. It continued with three goods from the Paddock, Kona’s two new gravel-grinding models and our Santa Barbara adventure with Küat continued with the Struggle up Gibraltar.

Canyon Ultimate Review Coming in the Tech Issue #57

Nearly every person who encounters a Canyon has the same question first, “what kind of bike is that?” It’s only a natural inquiry of a bike that has angles and lines screaming speed, but is only subliminally branded.

Davis Phinney’s First Tour de France Win Story
Davis Phinney has a special place in the heart of any kid that discovered bike racing in the 1980s. He wasn’t a super-human aerobic freak like Greg LeMond; he wasn’t a climber with the physique of a teenage girl with an eating disorder. Davis was relatable. Davis was cool. It was as if your high school football team’s all-state quarterback decided to stop throwing touchdown passes and give bike racing a try. Davis had biceps, he had an “I got this” air about him.

Goods From the Paddock

For the second week in August at the Peloton Service Course we’ve identified some products from the paddock that will be on test soon; a power meter crankset from ROTOR, a super-light vest for chilly summer mornings from Velocio and a versatile roll-top backpack from Thule.

The New 2017 Line From Kona

Last year we traveled to Bellingham, WA to visit Kona’s American headquarters where we sampled the trails, gravel, pavement and shot hoops in the warehouse. This year we ventured due north from Bellingham to Vancouver and the outdoor mecca of Squamish, BC to see what Kona has in store for 2017. As first time visitors to an area we had heard so much about we were excited to see if Squamish lived up to its hype.

Climbing Gibraltar
Gibraltar Road meanders up the rocky and rugged Santa Ynez Mountains with almost no regard to pitch or direction—it’s steep when we need respite and the gradient eases long after our legs start begging for mercy. The climb really starts at the sharp, banked turn onto Mountain Drive, just after the Santa Barbara Mission, but it doesn’t officially count until nearly ten minutes later when we pass the mailboxes at the intersection of Cielito and Gibraltar. The climb then kicks up with a vengeance.
