Scott’s Addict hasn’t changed appreciably in a few years, and though it may not be making headlines, it remains one of the top all-around race bikes on the road. The Addict 20 features this tried-and-terrific frame plus a sensible mix of parts.
Although the frame doesn’t share the same high-end carbon construction as more expensive Addicts, it’s still admirably stiff. In fact, it had the tk-stiffest bottom bracket of any bike tested for this Buyer’s Guide. It also has confident race geometry that enables an aggressive position, with the 140-millimeter head tube, 72.5-degree head-tube angle, and sprightly 992-millimeter wheelbase.
The parts hung on the Addict 20 are similarly race-oriented. No, an Ultegra mechanical drivetrain isn’t the most alluring group, but it is purposefully functional, less expensive to replace if you’re feasting on training miles, and simple to adjust. The flat-mount RS805 brakes are also trouble-free workhorses.
Beyond the shifting parts, Scott sticks with its Syncros parts line, which is a bit uninspired, albeit functional. The aluminum wheels are inoffensive, as are the RR2.0 handlebars, but clearly they were chosen to hit a price point.
Out on the road, the RP2.0 wheels don’t stop the Addict 20 from feeling responsive and eager to drive corners aggressively. Between the geometry and the powerful disc brakes, we were far more confident than usual on fast descents, corners, and switchbacks. The Addict 20 would be a fine bike for knocking bars in a crit — it’s at its best when you push it into corners and sprint hard out of them.
For racers, riders who want aggressive handling and fit, or those who just like stiff frames, the Addict 20 is a fine option, especially if your budget is a bit limited. You might want some nicer wheels for a full season of racing, but otherwise it is dialed. Those seeking a more comfortable, relaxed ride should probably look elsewhere.
Component highlights: Shimano Ultegra mechanical drivetrain, Shimano RS805 flat-mount hydraulic disc brakes, Syncros RP2.0 disc wheels.
