SRAM to offer free hydraulic brake replacement at U.S. cyclocross nationals

Components maker SRAM will undertake a mobile exchange program for its recalled road hydraulic brakes next month at the USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships in Colorado.
In an e-mail sent on Monday, USA Cycling and SRAM have informed athletes registered for the national championships that the Chicago-based brand would provide “a free exchange and installation service at the U.S. cyclocross nationals event in Boulder, Colorado.”
SRAM recalled its hydraulic road disc and rim brakes earlier this month after system failures in extreme cold.
Amateur athletes whose SRAM hydraulic disc brakes were affected by a recall in December can have a “transitionary Avid mechanical disc brake system” installed for free Tuesday, Jan. 7 through Saturday, Jan. 11 at Valmont Bike Park in Boulder. More details are available on SRAM’s website.
In an update to its recall webpage dated Dec. 20, SRAM announced that it expected a “technical and production update” on a hydraulic redesign on Jan. 15.
“The recall has especially impacted the U.S. cyclocross community in advance of nationals. Our race tech staff will work to be sure that any affected athletes bikes are race ready,” SRAM’s global marketing director David Zimberoff said in the e-mail on Monday.
According to SRAM, all riders can be serviced on-site in Boulder, likely with same-day completion, and those racing the national championships will take priority. Replacements for hydraulic rim brakes will also be available.
