K-Edge’s redesigned Garmin mount differs from previous iterations in both functionality and construction: It’s now a three-piece unit instead of two, and the clamp itself has changed from a two-bolt system to a one-bolt system with hinge. With a few wise design decisions, K-Edge has improved an already-stellar product, making this mount the most solid and versatile on the market.

The same CNC-machined construction remains, but the bar clamp gets a makeover: K-Edge has moved to a hinged clamp that requires only one bolt; the hinge is affixed to the mount, which means no more dropped bolts and clamp face when you’re installing the unit. Adjustments are easier too: Loosen one bolt, adjust, snug up again. Simple as that. It’s a marked improvement over previous iterations that required two bolts and a separate clamp face.

Speaking of installing the unit, we were excited to see two small bolts that connect the arm to the handlebar bracket, because we assumed it meant we could swap out the arm and leave the mount affixed. In other words, if you wanted to swap out your Garmin mount for a GoPro mount without removing the clamp, you could. Sweet! Unfortunately, K-Edge tells us the two pieces are not designed to be taken apart and doing so can compromise the strength of the unit. The company says the new design allows the CNC-machining process to be done more quickly, efficiently, and cheaply, which is the reason for the three-piece construction. So while you can take the mount apart, K-Edge does not recommend it. This seems like a missed opportunity; perhaps an opportunity for K-Edge in the future?

It’s designed to work with the Garmin Edge 520, 510, and 500, but will also work with the new Garmin Edge 820. The XL mount works with the Edge 1000. There are a variety of other mounts available too, from GoPro mounts to platforms for other computers like Wahoo’s Elemnt.
