In this image from the 2002 edition, at the start in Luxembourg, Leblanc was in his 15th year as race director after his previous careers as a pro bike racer ((1967–71) and sports writer and editor (1971–88) with the French newspapers, La Voix du Nord and L’Équipe. Leblanc handed over the reins as race director in 2007 to current Tour boss Christian Prudhomme. In the Tour’s 113-year history there have been only five full-time directors (not including a transitionary period in 1988-89): Henri Desgrange, Jacques Goddet (and his postwar partner Félix Lévitan), Leblanc and Prudhomme.
