Feb 23, 2014 – Michal Kwiatkowski of Poland held off Spain’s
two-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador to win the Tour of Algarve
after Briton’s Mark Cavendish claimed Sunday’s fifth and final stage.
Cavendish, who races for the same Omega Pharma team as does Kwiatkowski,
prevailed in a dash for the line at the end of the 155.8 kilometer closing
ride from Tavira to Vilamoura.

Kwiatkowski had taken possession of the overall leader’s yellow jersey
after winning the second stage and then tightened his grip further in
Wednesday’s time trial. At the end of the week in the Algarve he had a
19 second advantage over Contador, with Portugal’s world champion Rui
Costa in third, 32s back.

The 23-year-old Kwiatskowski was part of the Omega Pharma team that won the
team time trial title at last year’s world championships.
