Twenty years may not seem like a long time in the machinations of cycling — hell, the Tour de France has run 93 editions.
For mountain biking — or world championship mountain biking to be exact — 20 years is just old enough to afford a nostalgic look back and see what a long ride it’s been.
And that’s exactly what the organizers of the 2010 mountain bike world championships in Mont Saint Anne — a legendary venue in its own right — did in the midst of this year’s event. It was dubbed a short-track race of legends, but the intros probably took longer than the “race” itself. Sure, “Deadly Nedly” Overend was on hand to drive the pace, but when the “feed zone” is stocked with Quebec brew, well then, it was more about old friends, reminiscing and having fun.
Filip Mierhaeghe didn’t get booed; Rockwell is fit (staying on Willow’s wheel will do that); Paola still rocks Lycra; and Ned can, and regularly does, rip the legs of guys more than half his age.
For his work photographing all things fat-tired, Tom Moran was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. Singletrack.com is lucky to have a mountain biking legend capturing mountain biking legends. Enjoy.
