Rotem Ishay (Fort Lewis College) repeated his strong cross-country performance at Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals Saturday morning in California, soloing to victory in the men’s Division I short-track race.
On the course at Northstar-at-Tahoe resort near Truckee, Ishay attacked a front group of four containing eventual second place Brady Kappius (University of Colorado), third Bradford Perley (Lees-McCrae College), and fourth Menso de Jong with a few laps remaining. None of the three could respond, setting up Ishay for his second national title in as many days.
Sage Wilderman (Fort Lewis College), out for blood after a close second place in Friday’s cross-country, took victory against a strong Erica Zaveta (Lees-McCrae College) in the women’s Division 1 race. The two leaders lapped all but half a dozen riders as they battled around the course. Sarah Sturm (Fort Lewis College), Kaila Hart (Fort Lewis College) and Jill Behlen (University of Wyoming) rounded out the top five.
Howard Grotts (Colorado School of Mines), winner of Friday’s Division II cross-country, stole the show once again in the men’s D2 short-track. The 17-year-old led a select group containing Macky Franklin (Middlebury College), Tristan Cowie (Brevard College) and Wesley Lamberson (Union College) before breaking free in the waning laps. Franklin, Cowie, Lamberson and Scott Hoffner (Brevard College) rounded out the podium.
Caroline Decosimo (Brevard College) took the women’s Division II contest, shedding Rachel Millsop (Union College) with three laps remaining. Emily Brown (United States Air Force Academy) crossed the line in third, with Klara Rossouw (Mars Hill College) and Esmeralda Martinez Ramos (Mesa Stage College) in fourth and fifth.
After the second day of racing, Fort Lewis College leads the Division I team omnium with 496 points while Lees-McRae is second with 424 and the University of Colorado isn’t far behind in third with 421 points. In Division II, Brevard College sits in first with 491 points while Union College is in second with 471 and Warren Wilson College is ranked third with 377.
