Colorado CycleFest is a weekend of festivities in Denver and Boulder that include a fundraising dinner and a ride with Wiens and DeMattei. Proceeds will go to the formation of the league, which has plans for a June conference (Leader’s Summit), summer rider camps and a four-race high school only series in September and October.
The effort to start a league in Colorado follows the success of the NorCal and SoCal High School Cycling Leagues, founded in 2000 and 2009 respectively. Also in 2009, the National Interscholastic Cycling Association was launched with the goal of starting similar leagues in Colorado and Washington in the next few years. By 2020, NICA’s vision is to have developed high school mountain biking coast to coast.
To kick-start the effort in Colorado, a range of cycling celebrities will come together May 1 and 2 at Colorado CycleFest. They include Olympic and World Cup stars DeMattei and Wiens; Jonathan Vaughters of the Garmin-Transitions cycling team; Specialized riders Ned Overend and 24-Hour world champion Rebecca Rusch. Also scheduled to appear is Trek rider and Olympian Travis Brown.
The Colorado CycleFest weekend includes a gala dinner and silent auction on May 1, in Palettes Restaurant at the Denver Art Museum. May 2 is a road ride lead by DeMattei and Wiens from Boulder followed by lunch at the Bacaro Venetian Taverna, hosted by Fabio Flagiello.
“It’s great so see such a large collection of past and present champion cyclists rallying for high school cycling,” said Matt Fritzinger, head of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. “Every one of these athletes understands the historical significance of introducing cycling as an organized sport for high school students.”
Prizes for the silent auction are donated by founding national sponsor Specialized, as well as SRAM, Trek, Wheat Ridge Cyclery and Yeti. New corporate sponsors are Poudre Valley Health Systems and Yeti Beti.
