Dylan Johnson was hit by a truck on a training ride on Monday and suffered a broken tibia, he shared on Instagram.

The incident comes at one of the most inopportune times of the season, forcing the elite gravel racer to sit out Unbound Gravel, one of the season’s pinnacle gravel events which is now less than two weeks away.

Beyond his racing, Johnson has gained a following for constantly tinkering with bike tech in innovative ways. His YouTube channel runs through the ins and outs of aero performance and tire choice in an effort to endlessly optimize. Most recently he headed to the wind tunnel to see about finding watts for this year’s Unbound.

With that focus on marginal gains, Johnson trains as hard as you’d expect. His current average weekly distance is 471 miles and 25 hours. Unbound is the race he puts the most effort into training for and the race that gets the most focus on his channel.

If you follow Johnson’s content, you wouldn’t be alone in wondering if this Unbound was the one where he’d see a breakout performance. He’s planned and trained and he’s faster than ever. Unfortunately, now none of that matters. All the careful planning is thrown to the wind, but he does manage to sound positive anyway.

“I was very pleased with how my Unbound block went over the past month, and it’s a major bummer not to use that fitness that I gained,” he wrote on Instagram. “I know it won’t be time wasted, though. Hopefully, it’ll act as a base for the late season.”
