The new GreenEdge team is eager to be the first Australian cycling team to compete at the elite level. In addition, GreenEdge is committed to helping put medals around Australian necks in the Olympics. The final two recruits will help the team achieve its goals.
GreenEdge has signed the under-23 world time trial champion, Luke Durbridge, as well as the bronze medalist, Michael Hepburn, for its 2012 lineup.
Hepburn also won the prologue and a stage of the Tour de l’Avenir.
The promising young Australian riders, both 20, are also familiar with success on the world stage on the track. Along with the rest of the Australian team, Durbridge and Hepburn won the track world championships in team pursuit.
GreenEdge general manager Shayne Bannan explained that, despite being a road team, GreenEdge is committed to supporting the young riders in achieving their goals on the track.
The team hopes to support its riders to win Australian gold in the team pursuit in London. Durbridge and Hepburn will be crucial talent for the Australian team, along with GreenEdge teammate, Jack Bobridge.
Since Dunbridge’s primary goal for the coming year is Olympic victory, GreenEdge will support him as he focuses on the track for the beginning of the season.
Hepburn is also committed to success in his track season.
Long term, he considers the classics a great motivator. Hepburn looks forward to learning from Stuart O’Grady and his Dutch teammates, Sebastian Langeveld, Jens Mouris and Pieter Weening.
In order to encourage Durbridge and Hepburn to focus on the track in the early season, their contracts will start Febuary 1, 2012.
