Roger Legeay has staunchly defended his organization, insisting the group MPCC (Movement Pour Cyclisme Crédible) remains a legitimate voice for change despite recent hurdles.
The departure of Lampre-Merida from the group earlier this year as well as the continued presence of beleaguered Astana has raised questions about the group’s legitimacy as a voice of change within the peloton. Legeay, who started the volunteer group eight years ago to bolster ethical conduct within the peloton, said the group remains committed to its principles.
In a lengthy interview posted on its website Tuesday, Legeay said the departure of Lampre only reconfirmed the group’s commitment to a tough, anti-doping line.
“Our rules have not changed since 2007. Among MPCC affiliated teams, no rider who has been suspended more than six months may be retained by his team. These rules were established by all the managers, and to this day they have always applied them,” Legeay said. “In order to avoid having to comply with this rule, the Lampre team chose to leave our organization. They alleged some labor law issues in Italy. And I want to make it clear that if they had not, we would have considered excluding them.”
