Rolf Aldag, the longtime performance manager at Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, is out as speculation heightens over the imminent arrival of Remco Evenepoel.

Aldag, 55, ran the Red Bull shop since 2022, helping to transition the team from a classics-centered squad centered around Peter Sagan into a grand tour powerhouse.

After winning a Giro d’Italia and a Vuelta a España, the team completed its most successful Tour de France yet, with third overall and the white young rider’s jersey with breakout star Florian Lipowitz.

That didn’t stop the major shakeup at the budding super team backed by energy drinks giant Red Bull.

The departure of the German will lay the groundwork for what insiders expect will be the Evenepoel takeover.

“Rolf took on responsibility during a time of transition,” said team boss Ralph Denk. “He helped drive our team forward both athletically and structurally. This chapter ends now that we have achieved our objectives.

“For the next chapter of our story, we have jointly decided to bring in fresh impetus and take a new direction.”

It’s not known if there are other factors involved, but it appears the team is cleaning the slate for the imminent arrival of Evenepoel.

Velo reported last week that negotiations hit their final stages and other outlets in the Belgian and Italian media have reported the deal is done.

Aldag joined in 2022 and helped deliver the team’s first grand tour victories, including Jai Hindley’s Giro win that same year, Primož Roglič’s Vuelta triumph in 2024, and Lipowitz’s podium and white jersey in Paris.

“We have jointly decided that now is the right time for both parties to pursue new challenges,” Aldag said. “We successfully navigated the complex transition from a sprint-focused team to one built around stage racing, and celebrated major victories. Now is the moment to take a new path.”

The arrival of coach and Evenepoel confidante Sven Vanthourenhout, the former Belgian national coach who guided Evenepoel to two Olympic gold medals, will join Red Bull in a major new role.

It’s not known if the Belgian’s arrival created conflict for Aldag, who did not reveal if he has new plans.
