The 24-Hours of Moab will once again play host to the 24-hour National Championships this weekend.
Rainy weather in the Moab area is forecast to clear by Oct. 9 and 10, making for a fast course, according to race director Laird Knight.
Along with hundreds of amateur racers riding in teams, 24-hour National Champion and two-time 24-Hours of Moab Champion Josh Tostado is returning to defend both titles. Kelly Magelky and Ernesto Marenchin, who finished second and fourth last year respectively, will also be back.
Earlier in the week, Knight said he wasn’t sure if last year’s defending champion Ester Horanyi would be in attendance. That leaves Yari Kirkland to go up against Laureen Coffelt, Kris Cannon and Timari Pruis.
Meanwhile, Moab will host the 24-hour National Championships. Fifteen different classes will race for the Stars & Stripes Jersey(s) and designation as U.S. 24-hour National Champs.
After finishing second to five-time defending champion Chris Eatough in 2008, Tostado assumed the Stars-and-Stripes in 2009 logging 17 laps. After riding the first few laps nearly side-by-side with eventual silver medalist Magelky,Tostado grabbed a small lead on lap three and never looked back. Magelky finished with 16 total laps.
Horanyi also dethroned the reigning champion in the women’s division, Pua Sawicki. Horanyi logged 13 laps of the Moab course to finish just ahead of Sarah Kaufmann on her final go around.
