Georgia Gould and Max Plaxton overcame what one pro racer deemed “oppressive” heat to win the Mellow Johnny’s Classic at Lance Armstrong’s Texas ranch on Saturday.

Gould (Luna Pro Team) continued her strong showings of late by gapping a small pro women’s field of 19 riders early on. With temperatures well into the 90s, Gould completed three, seven-mile laps in 1:42:53. Kelli Emmett (Giant) was second at 1:45:34. Third was Gould’s Luna teammate Katerina Nash.
Gould most recently finished second at the World Cup stop in Offenburg, Germany a week before the Pro Cross-Country Tour race at the Mellow Johnny’s Classic and won the second stop of the Triple Crown series in Colorado earlier in May.
In a larger pro men’s field, Plaxton (ShoAir-Specialized) adjusted to the heat about half way into a four lap affair. He established a healthy lead by crossing the line at 2:01:31. Next up was Geoff Kabush (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) at 2:03:42 and Todd Wells at 2:04:02.
