Trek back for more WORS in '11, Subaru Cup Pro XCT now UCI Cat 1 event

Organizers of the Wisconsin Off Road Series and the Subaru Cup Pro Cross-Country Tour stop said Tuesday that Trek will again sponsor both events and that the latter race has been upgraded by the UCI.
As part of the very popular Wisconsin Off Road Series (WORS), the Subaru Cup Pro XCT will also include a full slate of amateur racing on June 26 and 27.
The first priority of WORS is “to create access to fun, competitive mountain biking for as many individuals as possible,” said series director Don Edberg. “We’re proud to align the series and the Subaru Cup with Trek.”
Based on current UCI World Cup criteria, the Subaru Cup Pro XCT course is approximately 4 miles of wooded singletrack, peppered with fast descents and short, steep climbs. Over an area of 60 acres, the course winds in on itself several times to provide spectators access and numerous viewing opportunities.
For 2011, the Subaru Cup Pro XCT has UCI Category 1 status on the international mountain bike calendar. Along with setting minimum prize purses, course distances and lap times, the designation will attract riders looking to collect UCI points needed to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Sam Schultz (Subaru Trek) and Georgia Gould (Luna Pro Team) won the race in 2010. At that race hundreds of enthusiastic fans lined the course, which led many pro riders to compare the atmosphere to a World Cup race. The most popular spectator areas, including the Trek Fire Lane Drops, will return in 2011.
Meanwhile, Trek’s Michael Browne said WORS is a “premier” partner when it comes to mountain bike racing in the U.S. Now in its 20th season, WORS is a hotbed of cycling, consistently averaging more than 700 racers and close to 1,000 spectators per event at each of 12 distinct venues throughout Wisconsin.
“As the world leader in mountain bike technology, Trek chooses only premier partners,” said Browne, global mountain bike brand manager. “Not only is WORS that premier partner, they set the standard for mountain bike racing in the United States.”
The Subaru Cup will also serve as the second annual USA Cycling Midwest Regional Championships, which will crown champions in all age classes and ability categories as “Fastest in the Midwest”.
