Alberto Contador content with silver at 2011 Spanish national road race, will rest up for the Tour de France

Alberto Contador declared himself content with a silver medal at Sunday’s Spanish national road championships and said he would now rest for Saturday’s start of the Tour de France.

Contador, who finished second to Jose Joaquin Rojas (Movistar) on Sunday after winning bronze in Friday’s time trial, said he was “very happy with the result and perhaps more with the great work of my team.”

“With Benjamin (Noval) in the plain, Dani (Navarro Garcia) in the first part of the climb and Jesus (Hernandez Blazquez) making the final selection, it was very easy to attack,” he said.

Contador said he was particularly pleased with the result because the course didn’t suit his strength.

“But I’m happy because it seems that the legs go little by little,” he said. “I was watching my watts, and I have seen Rojas in Switzerland — I knew he was going very well and was very strong.”

That said, Contador said no one should draw many conclusions from Sunday’s race for the upcoming Tour.

“It was not a very hard climb, although it was hot and we did 210 kilometers, which is also hard,” he said. “But my performance and fitness will be seen in the Tour. I have rested since the Giro and until the start of the Tour I’ll do the same.”
