Kaitlin Antonneau (Marian University) doubled up on the final day of the 2013 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships on Sunday, winning the Division I women’s individual omnium and the road race.
In the 101-kilometer road race, Antonneau out-sprinted teammate Coryn Rivera to take the title. Not long before the finish, Antonneau and Katharine Hall (University of California-Berkeley) caught Rivera and Abigail Mickey (University of Colorado-Boulder) at the top of the final climb. Antonneau and Rivera then paired up and raced together to the finish line.
“I just knew I had to climb within myself,” Antonneau told USA Cycling. “It was really windy and hard. When we were maybe a half-mile from the top, I really started to dig and go hard to make sure I caught them before we started to descend. That worked out well for me.”
Finishing third was Mickey.
Antonneau’s victory in the omnium was her third consecutive title in the event, and she edged Rivera by just six points. Justine Boddy (Colorado State University) was third. On Saturday, Rivera won the criterium and Antonneau was second.
The men’s Division I road race, held on a 125km course, ended in a solo effort by Howard Grotts (Fort Lewis College). After a number of failed breakaways, Grotts launched his own attack on the final climb of the day. At the top he had about a one-minute gap on the field, and from there he sprinted to the finish line and beat Adam Leibovitz (Marian University) and Cody Foster (Texas A&M University) by 1:33 for the victory.
“I almost expected them to come right around the corner and blow right by me because descending on the road is definitely not my strong point,” Grotts said. “Luckily, I had built up enough of a lead on the climb to survive. I had a little bit of an advantage because I didn’t have to race the couple days before and a lot of them did the criterium and the time trial. This was the focus for Fort Lewis and for me.”
Leibovitz triumphed in the Division I men’s individual omnium with 289 points, finishing ahead of Renan Maia (Fort Lewis College) and Brandon Feehery (Lindenwood University).
