Barry re-ups with Sky; Knees, Flecha confirmed

Michael Barry will stay with Team Sky next season as the British team continues to fill out its squad following the arrival of Mark Cavendish this week.

The veteran Canadian, who joined the team two years ago, will stay with the squad at least one more season after penning a contract extension, the team confirmed Thursday.

“I’ve enjoyed being a part of the development and growth of the team in the last two years and am looking forward to another season with Team Sky. To me, the environment is ideal: the team is well organized, the management is solid, the staff is committed and we have a great ambiance amongst the riders,” Barry said in a team release.

“All of the guys enjoy racing and being together which, in the end, produces results. I’m happy and proud to be a member of the team.”

Also extending with the team are Juan Antonio Flecha and Christian Knees.

Flecha said he will remain focused on the cobblestone classics while Knees remains devoted to becoming a top-level helper.

Team principal Dave Brailsford said all three riders bring solid qualities to the squad.

“At Team Sky we are always striving to improve as a team and retaining our key riders is a vital component of that strategy,” he said

“As athletes, their records at the very highest level of our sport speak for themselves. As senior professionals they have set a standard of behaviour that is an inspiration to our younger riders. All three have contributed hugely to our success as a professional team and we all look forward to continuing that momentum into 2012 and beyond.”
