It was 31-year-old Zanette’s first Giro stage win since 1995 although he showed early season form by finishing third in the Tour of Flanders last month.

Superstar sprinter Mario Cipollini was denied the chance to join his teammates in wearing their non-regulation “Black Lightning” jerseys Tuesday after officials told the Italian that he had violated uniform requirements so many times this year, that he risked expulsion from the race rather than a simple fine.
