Belgian Grace Verbeke (Topsport Vlaanderen-Ridley 2012) was seriously injured after a vehicle struck her during a training ride Thursday in Gistel, Belgium.
Belgian sports source Sporza reported that the 26-year-old, who in 2010 became Belgium’s first winner of the women’s Ronde van Vlaanderen, broke her eye socket, jaw and pelvis.
Verbeke’s father told Sporza that she was never in danger and “had always been conscious,” adding that she is undergoing additional tests at a hospital in Ostend.
In 2010 Verbeke won the women’s Tour of Flanders, took a national time trial championship, and placed sixth at the world road championship in Geelong, Australia.
