In the first two weeks of the Giro d’Italia, André Greipel won three sprints before leaving the race when the mountains loomed. To top off his excellent May, Greipel and his Lotto – Soudal team have agreed to terms on a contract extension until the end of 2018. Greipel, who has 132 professional wins on his palmares, has been with the Belgian team since 2011.
Lotto – Soudal team manager Marc Sergeant says, “He’s a classy person both after winning and losing, and the respect he gets from teammates and staff is amazing. Greipel always shows his appreciation and is also prepared to help out other teammates when the course suits them better. I haven’t seen many top riders doing that.” Greipel is now 33, but Sergeant believes that he can still win races. “He has the potential to keep riding at this level and get even more victories.”
Greipel is pleased that an agreement was reached: “The contract extension was something both parties really wanted.” The German appreciates both the team’s chemistry and support in the peloton, adding, “I can’t imagine riding for another team.” Greipel is one of the oldest members of the team and is able to help the younger riders when he can: “They help me, and I can give them tips.”
The Lotto – Soudal team has amassed 11 victories this season, and Greipel hopes he can “stay one of the best sprinters in the world and keep conquering victories for Lotto – Soudal.”
