Former Astana rider Matthias Kessler has been placed in an induced coma at a hospital in Mallorca after suffering serious head injuries in a training crash, it was reported on Friday.
Doctors say that the 30-year-old Kessler’s life is not in danger, but characterized his condition as “serious.” Kessler crashed after apparently swerving to avoid a cat during a training ride on the Spanish island.
“Matthias Kessler suffered a severe cranial trauma and is in the intensive care unit in an induced coma,” a spokesman for the Son Dureta hospital in the Majorcan capital of Palma said.
A former member of the T-Mobile team, Kessler won stage 3 of the 2006 Tour de France but tested positive for testosterone in 2007 while riding for Astana; his two-year suspension expired in July 2009.
