Good morning to our American audience. Welcome to another day of live updatesfrom the Vuelta a España. Today’s third stage is another short one:a 134.2 km from San Vicente del Raspieg to Murcia, dead flat along Spain’sCosta Blanca for the first 80 km, then heading west to the finish in Murcia. There are three “hot sprints” along the route and no mountain points. Thefinish is flat and straight on for the final two kilometers. The peloton’swill have a golden opportunity to measure their strength against each otherin one of the flattest stages in the whole Vuelta. This third stage, betweenSan Vicente del Raspeig and Murcia, will be the second shortest road stageof this year’s edition, at only 134.2.

3:34 p.m. – Hot – that’s the word for thethird stage of the 2002 Vuelta a Espana. Temperatures shot into the mid-90sfor the short 134-km stage from San Vicente del Raispeig to Murcia. The largelyflat stage rolls south just inland from the Med past the orange groves inthe desert-like country around Murcia.

All 203 riders remaining in the Vuelta took the sign-in this afternoon forthe 2 p.m. start in San Vicente del Raispeig. We are at the 50-kilometer mark of today’s 134.2 km stage. One rider — JurgenVan Goolen of Domo (198th at 19:12) — escaped at just 17km into today’sstage and is off the front, with an advantage of 7:11. The attacks came earlyin the stage, with five riders pulling off at 4 km. Van Goolen worked aloneafter the others faded3:43 p.m. – The Index Alesio team and others are picking up the paceand already Van Goolen’s lead is beginning to shrink. He now enjoys an advantageof 5:33. 3:45 p.m. – The situation on the road is still about the same. Onelone rider — Domo’s Jurgen Van Goolen — remains ahead of the field. We are68km from the finish. Looking ahead to the finish, we can expect a big battlebetween the sprinters. The last kilometer on the Avenida Juan Carlos I inMurcia is flat and straight. There is a traffic roundabout some 700 metersfrom the finish and then a straight 500-meter shot to the line. It shouldbe a sprinters’ fest. 3:55 p.m. – Van Goolen’s advantage is now down to 4:11. There is noway the sprinters’ squads are going to let this one get away. 4:05 p.m. – On the flat, flat roads on the way to Murcia, Van Goolen’sadvantage is now down to 3:23. 4:09 p.m. – The pace in the peloton has really picked up as the bigsprinters’ teams are setting pace at the front. Van Goolen is now 2:55 ahead. We have 54km to go.4:17 p.m. – Van Goolen continues his lone effort at the front of therace. His advantage is continuing to shrink. He is 2:30 ahead of the fieldand we have 51km to go. 4:18 p.m. – Yikes. That lead is shrinking faster than we thought.Poor Mr. Van Goolen is now just 45 seconds ahead of the field. We can surelyexpect a sprinters’ battle. 4:22 p.m. – Van Goolen is being pulled in. We are 47km from Murcia. 4:29 p.m. – So Van Goolen is in the field and the peloton is movingtoward the finish in Murcia, 40km away. As the Domo rider was being broughtback, the sprinters’ teams were very attentive, ready to cover any attacksfrom the field. Nothing happened and we can expect to see the “trains” formingup soon. 4:39 p.m. – We are some 33km from the finish in Murcia. No changesas the field is still together. 4:55 p.m. – We are 20km from the finish and the teams are moving tothe front and beginning to set up for the finale. 5:03 p.m. – ONCE, Telekom and Acqua e Sapone are patrolling the front. We have 10km to go.5:08 p.m. – We are 8km from the finish. The peloton is all togetherand we are speeding into the town of Murcia. We see Saeco, Telekom, Mapeiand Acqua e Sapone staying in front.5:10 p.m. – We are 5.5km from the finish. Lampre is moving up to the front of the field. Acqua e Sapone is setting up its train.5:12 p.m. – Acqua & Sapone is still out front. Cipollini is sittingin prime position. There is a big battle by other sprinters to find a goodspot on Cipo’s wheel. Telekom is setting up, too. 5:13 p.m. – Two kilometers to go. Cipo’s team is still up front. Telekomis working to set up Zabel. 5:14 p.m. 1 k to go.5:15 p.m. Cipollini is in prime spot, but he has Zabel right on his wheel. Lombardi leads out Cipo’Zabel is still on Cipo’s wheel. Petachi is coming up fast!Zabel can’t come by Mario and ….Cipollini earns his first Vuelta stage win! He didn’t this guy retire??!?!
