COPENHAGEN (VN) — Peter Sagan is hoping his dream season finishes off with a perfect ending with a strong ride in Sunday’s elite men’s road race.

The 21-year-old Slovak will be one of the outsiders for victory on a Copenhagen circuit that will require Sagan to battle nearly alone against the bigger national squads in the field.

“It’s nice that people talk of me as a favorite, but I know Sunday will be very challenging,” Sagan said Thursday. “We are only three riders on the Slovakian team, which will make it even harder without a strong team support. Everyone is speaking of a sprint finish, but I am not so sure. The weather could be a factor and the course has potential for surprise attacks. Whoever wins needs to be strong in the head and legs.”

Sagan has been on a tear this season, winning 15 races, including three stages at the Vuelta a España in his grand tour debut and another victory a week later at GP Prato in Italy. Only Philippe Gilbert, with 18 wins, has been more successful this season.

The longer world championship distance could be a challenge for Sagan and some of the other young challengers, such as John Degenkolb and Marcel Kittel.

Sagan is careful to not put too much pressure on himself.

“I know the course suits me, but I do not want to create too much expectations,” he said. “My goal during the race is to get a feel for the finish. It’s going to be a highly controlled race. I am dreaming to have a great race.”
