American Shane Kline crashed out of stage 1 at the Volta ao Alentejo in Portugal on Wednesday after colliding with a car. He suffered a broken collarbone and lacerations to his face after breaking through one of the vehicle’s windows.
His Rally team has few details about how the crash occurred — none of its riders or staff witnessed the collision firsthand. “Shane was lucky to walk away from this one,” said performance manager Jonas Carney. “He’s pretty banged up, but he will be OK.”
Kline, 26, is in his seventh year as a professional, having ridden for a smattering of domestic teams including SmartStop and Bissell. This stint in Portugal was his first trip to Europe to contest pro races.
