The National Racing Calendar will roll into Anniston, Alabama and onto web-enabled devices during the Sunny King Criterium on April 17th. Sunny King is the third event on the NRC schedule in 2010 and opens the string of criteriums in the Southeast that culminates with the USA Crits Speedweek finale at the Global BMW Sandy Springs Criterium in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
The race enters its eighth year and all entry fees will go to support the Relay For Life, a local chapter of the American Cancer Society. Organizers of the event have donated more than $50,000 to the charity since 2005.
Women will race for 60 minutes, while the men will turn 60 laps on the .7-mile rectangular circuit in downtown Anniston, all under city lights.
Fans can also watch the races live on the Sunny King Criterium website, www.sunnykingcriterium.com. Five cameras along the course will offer a complete picture of the action.
Riders confirmed for Sunny King include 2009 winner Karl Menzies (UnitedHealthcare-Maxxis), Ivan Dominguez, Frank Travieso, Luis Amaran and Anibal Borrajo (Jamis-Sutter Home), Alessandro Bazzanna and Ben Kersten (Fly V Australia) and Rahsaan Bahati (Bahati Foundation). Team Type 1 and Kenda-Geargrinder have also committed to fielding teams.
Colavita-Baci, TIBCO, Vera Bradley Foundation and Kenda highlight the teams expected to make the women’s pro race dynamic.
“We are pleased to again welcome top professional and amateur competitors to Sunny King for world class bicycle racing in historic downtown Anniston,” said race director Mike Poe. “The men and women pros never fail to put on a thrilling show for the spectators who turn up each year in droves. We hope that sponsors and cycling fans unable to join us in-person will tune in to catch the racing action live on our website.”
The Alabama Department of Tourism & Travel has selected the Sunny King Criterium as a Top 10 event for the state of Alabama for 2010. In addition to being an NRC event, the race is part of the Southeast Women’s Cycling Series, Alabama Cycling Association Points Series and The Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic Road Series.
