Mark Cavendish kicked to victory in Friday’s second stage at the Tour of Oman.

Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl did all the work to control a breakaway, and set up the veteran sprinter for the fast finish.

A day after finishing second to Fernando Gaviria (UAE Emirates), Cavendish silenced any critics with an easy victory to open his 2022 campaign.

“I was looking forward to the sprint. It was like a Tour de France sprint stage,” Cavendish said. “We got quite a bit of a new team here, and it takes just little while to get into it. I knew the team was going good yesterday, and things didn’t quite work out. I’ve only been on my bike five, six weeks, so I am happy to win.”

Kaden Groves (BikeExchange-Jayco) came through second, with Amaury Capiot (Arkéa-Samsic) crossing the line third.

Cavendish moved into the overall lead with the win.

Cavendish, 36, who has a joint-record 34 stage wins on the Tour de
France, won the 167.5km stage at the Suhar Corniche in the north of the country.

Colombian Gaviria was fourth after claiming Thursday’s opening stage, allowing Cavendish to take the lead.

Saturday’s third day of action is a 180km run between Sultan Qaboos University and Qurayyat.
