After a messy merger of the now defunct National Racing Calendar (NRC) and National Criterium Calendar (NCC) into one Pro Road Tour calendar for 2016, USA Cycling looks to have pared down and improved the U.S. domestic pro race schedule for 2017.

Major races are no longer overlapping on the same weekend, as was the case on three occasions in the past year. Also, the calendar is more geographically coherent, with minimal back-and-forth transit across the country.

“We have had input from the Pro Road Committee and various teams, athletes and race directors, including a sit-down meeting in May, and we feel that this lineup of events is an excellent step in the second year of the Pro Road Tour,” said Micah Rice, VP of events at USA Cycling. “We had a great first year of the PRT last year, and we feel that 2017 will allow for some excellent racing.”

Also of note are two new UCI stage races: Tour of Colorado and Tour of the Commonwealth in Virginia. Unfortunately, at this point, it does not appear that they will offer women’s races.
